Customers say cardboard for almost any stiff box. In packaging terms, it usually means one of three materials.

Paperboard is a single thick sheet, like a cereal box. Corrugated has a wavy middle layer between two flat sheets, like a shipping carton. Rigid board is thick, dense board wrapped in printed paper.

Most cookie boxes on a counter are paperboard. Corrugated is for mail and stacking in bulk, and rigid board is for gifts that should last.

Knowing which one you need saves money. A corrugated box on a bakery counter looks bulky, and a thin paperboard box in the mail arrives crushed.

To see every shape we make in these materials, browse the full custom cookie box collection by style.

Choosing a paperboard thickness

If you are moving from a thin stock box, bring one with you to the decision. Tell us what went wrong with it and we can choose a board that fixes that exact problem.

Paperboard thickness is measured in points, where one point is a thousandth of an inch. Higher numbers are stiffer and hold heavier loads.

The right thickness depends on cookie weight, box size and how the box is carried. A big box of heavy cookies needs more stiffness than a single sugar cookie.

Window boxes need a step up too. Cutting a window removes part of the panel, so the board around it has to work harder.

Thick bakery-style cookies can weigh several times more than a thin sugar cookie. A dozen of them puts real strain on the bottom panel.

When the board is too thin, the base bows and the cookies tip toward the middle. Lids also sag and press on the top layer.

For heavy loads, an auto-lock bottom is worth the small extra cost. The base folds into a locked floor that does not pop open when lifted.

If your cookies are oversized, our large cookie boxes for oversized bakes page covers deeper builds and wider footprints.

Signs your current box is too thin

Many bakers come to us after a cheaper box failed. These are the warning signs we hear about most often.

Any one of these points to a step up in board thickness or a different bottom style.

Humidity is the one people forget. A box that feels fine in a dry office can soften in a kitchen full of steam, so allow some margin.

  • The base bows when you lift a full box
  • Lids dent when boxes are stacked two high
  • Corners crush in a delivery bag
  • Tuck flaps pop open when the box tilts
  • Boxes warp after a day in a humid kitchen

How to pick the right board

The quickest way to choose is to think about the hardest moment in the box's life. Is it the walk to a car, a stack in a display, or a trip through the mail?

Work through these steps and tell us your answers in your quote request.

If you are unsure, err one step thicker. The cost difference per box is small compared with one crushed delivery.

  1. Weigh a full box of cookies on a kitchen scale.
  2. Note how many boxes will stack on top of each other.
  3. Decide whether the box is carried by hand or shipped by mail.
  4. Choose white SBS or brown kraft for the look you want.
  5. Ask us to confirm the board in your quote.

Corrugated board for shipping cookies

Paperboard is not built for the post on its own. Parcels get dropped, stacked and squeezed, and a single layer of board cannot take that.

Corrugated board has an air-filled middle layer that absorbs knocks. It is the right outer box for any cookie order that travels by courier.

You can print corrugated directly and skip a separate gift box. Our custom printed cookie mailer boxes do exactly that for subscription and gift orders.

For fragile cookies, place a paperboard box inside the corrugated mailer. The inner box keeps cookies tidy while the outer one takes the knocks.

Size the mailer so the inner box fits with a thin layer of padding on every side. Too much empty space lets the inner box slide and hit the walls.

White SBS or kraft cardboard

Both come in the same thicknesses. The difference is the surface and how print looks on it.

White SBS has a bright, smooth face, so photos and bright colors print sharply. Kraft is brown and fibrous, and colors print darker unless we add white ink first.

Kraft board is often a little stronger for its thickness because of its longer fibers. That makes it a sensible choice for heavy cookies in a plain style.

If you are comparing materials, our lighter paper cookie boxes show the thinner end of the range for single treats.

Cardboard boxes for events and wholesale

Caterers and event bakers often need hundreds of identical boxes for one day. Board choice matters more here, because boxes get packed fast and carried in crates.

Wholesale orders to cafes usually travel in stacks. A firm two-piece lid in 20 pt board holds its shape under several layers in a delivery crate.

If the boxes will sit on a counter for buyers to pick up, our cookie display boxes with open fronts keep the stack visible.

Plan a little extra stock for events. A few spare boxes cover any that get bent in the rush of setup.

Stacking and storage

Cardboard boxes are often stacked on counters, in display cases and in the back of a van. Each layer adds weight to the one below.

A two-piece lid box stacks better than a tuck end because the lid walls carry the load. Square corners and heavier board help too.

Store flat boxes off the floor in a dry room. Board absorbs moisture, and damp board loses much of its stiffness.

Assembled boxes take far more room, so fold them as close to packing time as you can.

Rotate older stock to the front so boxes do not sit for months. Board that has been stored for a long time can lose a little of its snap at the folds.

Proofs, production and delivery

Send your logo or full artwork, along with your box size and board choice. Our team places it on the dieline and sends a free digital proof.

You can request changes as many times as you need. Production takes 4 to 6 business days after approval, then 2 to 3 business days in transit.

Shipping is free to the US, UK, Canada and Australia. If boxes arrive damaged, our return and reprint policy covers reports made within 10 days.

Cardboard cookie boxes start from $0.30 per unit. Board thickness, size, quantity and finish decide your final price.

Heavier board and corrugated cost more per box, but they cut breakage and refunds. Your quote compares options if you are unsure.

Lamination also helps the surface resist moisture and scuffs. On a box that gets handled a lot, it keeps the print looking new for longer.

When you know your weights and sizes, request a cardboard cookie box quote and we will suggest a board.

Cardboard Cookie Boxes: questions

Is cardboard the same as paperboard?

People use both words, but paperboard is one solid sheet and corrugated has a fluted middle layer. Most counter cookie boxes are paperboard.

What thickness should I choose for a dozen cookies?

A dozen standard cookies usually sits well in 18 or 20 pt board. Heavy stuffed cookies may need 24 pt or an auto-lock bottom.

What does pt mean?

Points measure board thickness, where one point equals one thousandth of an inch. Higher numbers are stiffer.

Can I mail cookies in a paperboard box?

Paperboard alone is not strong enough for most couriers. Use a corrugated mailer or put the paperboard box inside one.

Is kraft cardboard stronger than white?

Kraft is often a little stronger for the same thickness because of its longer fibers. White SBS prints brighter.

What is an auto-lock bottom?

It is a base that folds into a locked floor in one motion. It holds heavy loads without tape.

Will thicker board make my box hard to fold?

We set deeper score lines on heavier board so it still folds cleanly by hand.

Can you print on corrugated board?

Yes. We print mailers directly so they work as both the shipping box and the gift box.

Do cardboard boxes need inserts?

Not always. Inserts help when cookies are thin, iced or likely to slide in a larger box.

How should I store flat cardboard boxes?

Keep them flat, off the floor and in a dry room. Damp board loses stiffness.

How long until my cardboard boxes arrive?

Production takes 4 to 6 business days after proof approval. Shipping is free and takes 2 to 3 business days.

What if my boxes arrive bent or crushed?

Report damage within 10 days with photos. We reprint or refund the affected boxes.
