Many bakeries already have a tray or clear clamshell they like. The trouble is that it looks plain on a shelf and carries no label at all.

A sleeve fixes that. It wraps around the middle of the pack, holds the lid shut and gives you printed panels for branding, flavor and ingredients.

Because the sleeve is the only printed part, you can keep one stock tray and run several sleeve designs on top of it. When a flavor changes, you reprint a band, not a whole box.

Sleeves suit bakeries selling packs of four to eight cookies, cafes reselling wrapped trays and makers who want a gift look on a budget.

Sleeve styles and when each one fits

The right style depends on what sits underneath and how your customer opens the pack. A full sleeve hides the tray. A narrow band shows most of it.

Think about how the pack is opened, too. A full sleeve has to slide off before the lid lifts, while a narrow band can stay on.

Here is how the main options compare when we size them for bakeries.

StyleWhat it slides overGood for
Full open-ended sleeveA rectangle tray or plain boxSingle flavor packs of four to six cookies
Narrow wrap bandA clear clamshell or tall stackShowing most of the cookies through the lid
Sleeve with matching trayA printed or plain paperboard trayGift packs where both parts match

Measuring for a snug slide

A sleeve that is too tight tears at the fold or crushes a soft cookie. One that is too loose slips off when a customer picks the pack up by the middle.

Follow these steps with the actual tray, filled and closed, not the empty one from the supplier box.

  1. Fill the tray with cookies and close the lid fully.
  2. Measure the width and height of the closed pack where the sleeve will sit.
  3. Decide how wide the band should be from front edge to back edge.
  4. Send us the tray brand or a sample photo with a ruler beside it.
  5. Print the flat proof on paper, cut it out and test it on a tray before you approve.

Paperboard and window choices

White SBS paperboard gives the brightest color and the sharpest small type. Kraft paperboard has a brown, handmade feel and pairs well with white ink.

Thicker board between 18 and 24 pt holds its shape on larger trays and stays flat under a stack. Thinner board wraps tighter around a small stack of rounds.

Ask us which thickness suits your tray before you approve. A sleeve that bows outward on the shelf usually means the board was too stiff for a tight wrap, and a limp one means it was too thin.

A die-cut window lets the top cookie show through. Add PET window film if you want the opening covered, or leave it open when the tray already has a clear lid.

If the sleeve touches the cookies directly, say so. Food-contact grade board is available on request once we know how the pack is built.

If you like the kraft look but want a full box instead, compare our brown kraft cookie boxes before deciding.

One tray, many flavors

Sleeves are an inexpensive way to run a wide flavor range. You keep one tray size in stock and print a different sleeve for each line.

This also helps if you sell trays wholesale to cafes and delis. Staff can spot the flavor from across the room, which keeps restocking quick.

When the range outgrows trays, the same artwork files carry over to our full range of custom cookie boxes. A few habits keep a sleeve range looking like one family:

  • Color code each flavor with one band of Pantone color
  • Print the flavor name large on the front panel
  • Keep ingredients and allergens on the back panel
  • Run a short seasonal sleeve without buying new trays
  • Use the same logo position on every design

Artwork that wraps all the way around

A sleeve has a front, a back and two narrow sides. The glue seam usually sits on the back, so keep small text and barcodes away from that strip.

Your proof shows the flat sleeve with fold and seam lines marked. If you want help placing artwork across the panels, start with our free packaging design help.

Best-by stickers need a clear patch on the back or base. Plan that space before the art is final, or the sticker lands on your logo.

Side panels are narrow, but they face out when packs sit end to end in a basket. A short flavor name there pays off.

Faster packing on bake day

Sleeves arrive glued and flat, so packing is a single slide once the tray is closed. Most teams set up a short line: fill, close, sleeve, stack.

If you seal trays with a round sticker today, a sleeve can replace that step. It keeps the lid closed and adds the label in one move.

Store flat sleeves in their carton away from steam and heat. Damp board softens and gets harder to slide on.

For labeling rules worth checking before you print, read our notes on packaging cookies you plan to sell.

Sleeved trays on a counter or shelf

Sleeves turn a row of plain trays into a printed display. Lined up on a shelf, the matching bands read as one brand from a distance.

For counters where you also sell singles, pair sleeved packs with our countertop cookie display boxes. The two side by side cover both the impulse buy and the gift pack.

Spot UV or foil on the logo catches shop lighting without adding bulk. Matte lamination keeps fingerprints off dark sleeves that get handled a lot.

Common sleeve mistakes

First sleeve orders tend to stumble on the same handful of details. Every one of them shows up on a paper test fit before printing.

The most costly is the first one. A sleeve sized to an empty tray will not close over a domed lid once cookies sit inside.

  • Measuring an empty tray instead of a filled, closed one
  • Placing text over the glue seam on the back panel
  • Choosing thin board for a large, heavy tray
  • Forgetting a clear spot for a date or barcode label
  • Cutting a window that sits over a plain tray edge

Sleeves for macarons, bars and brownies

The same sleeve idea works beyond cookies. Brownie squares and granola bars sit well in a long tray with a narrow band around the middle.

If you sell macarons in a slide-out tray, see our macaron sleeve boxes with trays. That style uses a drawer that pushes out of the sleeve instead of a lid.

Some brands prefer a fixed insert under the sleeve to keep tall cookies upright. Tell us and we size the insert and sleeve together.

Proof, timing and quote

Every sleeve order starts with a free digital proof, and you can ask for unlimited revisions. We print within 4 to 6 business days of approval, and sleeves reach you 2 to 3 business days later.

Expect sleeve quotes from $0.30 per unit, moving with board, band width, quantity and finish. We ship sleeve orders free to the US, UK, Canada and Australia.

Cookie Sleeves: questions

What is a cookie sleeve?

It is a printed paperboard band that slides over a tray or box. It holds the pack closed and carries your branding and label.

Can you make sleeves for trays I already buy?

Yes. Send the filled tray size or a photo with a ruler, and we size the sleeve to fit it.

Do sleeves arrive flat or glued?

They arrive glued and flat, ready to open and slide on.

Can I have a window in the sleeve?

Yes. We die-cut a window and can cover it with PET film or leave it open.

Which board is better for sleeves, SBS or kraft?

SBS gives brighter color and sharper text. Kraft gives a brown, natural look and works well with white ink.

Can I print a different sleeve for each flavor?

Yes. Many brands keep one tray and print a separate sleeve design for each flavor.

Where should the barcode go on a sleeve?

Put it on the back panel, away from the glue seam. Your proof shows exactly where the seam falls.

Can I add foil to a cookie sleeve?

Yes. Foil stamping, spot UV and embossing are all available on sleeves.

Do you also make the tray under the sleeve?

Yes. We can print a matching paperboard tray, or you can keep your current tray.

How quickly can sleeves be printed?

Sleeves are printed within 4 to 6 business days of approval. Add 2 to 3 business days for delivery.

What if some sleeves arrive torn or misprinted?

Torn or misprinted sleeves found within 10 days of delivery are reprinted or refunded. A photo of a few sleeves beside the carton label is enough.

How much do custom cookie sleeves cost?

Sleeves start from $0.30 per unit. Your quote confirms the price for your band size and finish.
