Clear bags are the everyday choice for cookie decorators. When the icing is the product, buyers want to see it before they pay.

Bake sale organizers, coffee shops and market stalls use them for single cookies by the register. Party planners use them for favors at birthdays, showers and school events.

They also suit stacks of plain cookies sold as a snack pack. Three or four cookies in a tall clear bag look generous and cost little to package.

Bakeries that sell bread and pastries as well often pair clear bags with paper ones. You can see every option in our cookie and bakery bag collection.

What cellophane bags are made of

Most bags sold as cellophane today are made from OPP, a clear polypropylene film. It is clear, stiff enough to hold its shape, and resists tearing.

OPP gives a glassy, high clarity look that makes colors in royal icing pop. It also has a slight crinkle that people associate with gift wrap.

Food-contact grade materials are available on request. Tell us how the bag will be used and what will go inside, and we will confirm the right film.

OPP does not breathe the way paper does. That helps crisp cookies stay crisp, but it also means warm bakes will fog the bag.

Twist tie or self seal

The closure changes how fast you can pack and how the bag looks on the table. Both suit cookies, but in different settings.

Twist ties give a gathered top that looks like a small gift. Self seal bags have an adhesive strip on a flap, so they close flat and look neat on a shelf.

For large batches, self seal is quicker because there is no tie to twist. For gifts, the tie adds a finished touch, and you can swap colors per season.

Getting the bag size right

Measure the cookie after decorating, not before. Royal icing and sprinkles add height and sometimes width, and that changes which bag fits.

A bag that is too tight crushes icing at the edges. A bag that is too loose lets the cookie slide and bump against the seal.

For a flat bag, add the cookie's thickness to its width, then a little room. For twist ties, add about two inches of height for the gathered top.

These are typical starting points, and our full guide to cookie bag sizes covers more shapes and counts.

What goes insideTypical bag size
One 3 inch cookie4 by 6 inches
One 4 inch cookie5 by 7 inches
One 5 inch decorated cookie6 by 8 inches
Stack of three 3 inch cookies4 by 8 inches
Two cookie pops on sticks4 by 9 inches

Packing decorated cookies in clear bags

Royal icing needs time to dry fully before it goes into a bag. Bag it too soon and the film can stick to the surface and lift the design.

Follow these steps for clean results on every cookie.

For a wider view of labels, display and pricing your bakes, read our guide on how to package cookies for sale.

  1. Let iced cookies dry fully, usually overnight.
  2. Check the surface is hard to the touch, not tacky.
  3. Slide the cookie in face first so the design meets the front panel.
  4. Press out extra air before closing.
  5. Close with the twist tie or seal strip and add a label if needed.

Printing your logo on clear film

A printed logo turns a plain bag into branded packaging. Small marks near the top or bottom leave the cookie in clear view.

On clear film, dark and bold colors read best because the cookie sits behind the print. Light pastels can look faint against a busy cookie.

Keep text short. A logo, a name and maybe a website is usually enough for a single cookie bag.

If you need full ingredient lists, a small printed sticker on the back works better than printing them on the film. You can then change the text without reprinting bags.

  • Logo printed in one corner
  • Thin printed band near the top
  • Holiday pattern around the edge, clear center
  • Small ingredient line near the base
  • Event name and date for party favors

Seasonal and favor bags

Halloween is another busy time for clear bags, since parents hand out single cookies at school and on the street. Orange or purple edge prints keep the cookie visible in the middle.

Clear bags are easy to theme with print. A pattern of hearts, pumpkins or snowflakes around the edge keeps the center clear for the cookie.

For February orders, see our Valentine treat bags with heart prints, which use the same clear film.

Favor bags for weddings and showers often carry names and a date. Keep that text near the top so it shows above the cookie.

Ordering one plain clear stock and one printed seasonal run works well for many bakers. The plain bags cover everyday sales while the printed ones sell the holiday.

Cookie pops on sticks need a longer bag so the stick fits fully inside. The tie then gathers around the stick just below the cookie.

Odd shapes like stars, letters and animals need a bag sized to the widest point, not the average. Measure across the longest arms or ears.

Stacks of thin cookies stand upright in a tall bag. A piece of stiff card placed at the base keeps the stack straight and gives you space for a label.

Send a photo with your quote request when the shape is unusual. It helps us suggest a size that will not crush the edges.

Cellophane or paper

Cellophane shows the cookie, while paper hides it. That alone decides most cases.

Paper is better for warm or greasy bakes, because it breathes and does not fog. Cellophane is better for decorated cookies that people should see.

Some bakers use both. A clear bag goes around each cookie, and a paper bag carries the order home.

Our article on cellophane vs paper cookie bags compares freshness, cost and display in more detail.

Storing and displaying clear bags

Keep unused bags in their box, away from heat and sunlight. Film stays clearer when it is not left on a warm windowsill.

On display, lay bagged cookies flat in a tray or stand them in a basket. Stacking too many on top of each other can mark soft icing.

Clear bags catch the light, so keep displays away from direct sun. Heat builds up inside the film and can soften chocolate or icing.

For a firmer display option, our gable boxes with a cello window combine clear film with a carry handle.

Ordering clear bags

Cellophane bags start from $0.30 per unit. Size, print colors and quantity set the final price in your quote.

Our team sets up your logo for free and sends a digital proof. Production takes 4 to 6 business days after you approve it, and shipping is free to the US, UK, Canada and Australia.

If you are testing a new cookie, a printed label on a clear bag lets you change the design quickly. Print your logo onto the film once the cookie has found its buyers.

Tell us the count you expect per month as well. It helps us suggest an order size that will not sit in a cupboard for a year.

When you know your cookie size, ask for a clear bag quote and say which closure you prefer.

Cellophane Bags: questions

Are your cellophane bags real cellophane?

They are clear OPP film, which is what most cellophane bags are made from today. It is clear, crisp and tear resistant.

Which closure is best for cookie favors?

Twist ties give a gathered gift look that suits favors. Self seal bags look neater for retail counters.

What size bag fits a 4 inch cookie?

A 5 by 7 inch flat bag usually fits one 4 inch cookie. Thick or iced cookies may need a little more room.

Can I print my logo on clear bags?

Yes. Dark, bold colors read best on clear film, and we show placement on your proof.

Why does clear film sometimes cling to a decorated cookie?

Soft or tacky royal icing grips the film and can lift when the bag is opened. A full overnight dry keeps the surface hard enough to slide past it.

Do clear bags keep cookies fresh?

They slow drying compared with open air or paper. For longer shelf life, close them tightly and store away from heat.

Can I bag warm cookies?

No. Warm cookies fog the film and soften. Cool them fully first.

Do you make bags for cookie stacks?

Yes. Tall flat bags hold stacks of three or four cookies with room for a tie.

Can I use these bags inside a box?

Yes. Many bakers wrap single cookies in cellophane, then pack them into a printed box.

Can the bags have a holiday print?

Yes, a printed edge pattern keeps the center clear for the cookie. We can print any season or event.

How long does a bag order take?

Production takes 4 to 6 business days after proof approval. Shipping takes 2 to 3 business days.

What if the print on my bags is wrong?

Report a misprint within 10 days of delivery. We reprint or refund the affected bags.
