An insert is a flat sheet of paperboard with openings cut into it. It sits on a raised platform inside the box, and each cookie drops into its own opening.

The cookie rests on the box floor while the insert grips its edge. It cannot slide, spin or knock into the piece beside it.

This is a different job from straight partitions that split a box into lanes. If you pack cookies in rows or stacks, our cookie boxes with row dividers may suit you better.

Inserts shine when every piece is decorated and must be seen exactly as you placed it.

The platform height is set so the cookie top sits level with the insert surface. That makes the whole set look flat and even under the lid.

Who Needs Cookies Held in Place

Decorators who sell iced cookie sets are our biggest insert buyers. A set of six themed cookies only works if each one faces up and stays in order.

Wedding and event bakers use them for favor boxes with one or two cookies. A snug cavity stops a single cookie rattling around a small box.

Gift shops pairing cookies with other small items rely on inserts too. A cavity can hold a mini jar of jam, a wrapped candy or a folded note card.

Subscription cookie boxes use inserts to make each month look consistent. Subscribers open the same tidy layout every time.

Premium sets often pair an insert with a decorative outer box. Our fancy cookie boxes for premium sets show lid styles that suit this kind of layout.

Insert Layouts We Cut Most Often

Every layout is cut from a measurement you send. These are the patterns we start from most often.

Leave about two millimeters of clearance around each cookie. A cavity that is too tight scrapes icing when customers lift a piece out.

Shaped Cavities for Cutout Cookies

Round cavities fit round cookies, but cutouts are rarely round. Hearts, stars, letters and animals can each get an opening traced to their outline.

Send us the cutter you use or a clean photo of a cookie on a ruler. We trace the shape and add clearance for icing that spreads past the edge.

Shaped cavities need a little more board between openings. If your shapes have thin points, we may suggest slightly larger spacing to stop the board tearing.

For simpler builds, a square cavity around a shaped cookie still holds it well and costs less to cut.

Keep the same cutters for the whole season once the insert is made. A new cutter that is a few millimeters larger will not fit the old cavities.

Matching the Insert to the Box Print

The insert is the first thing seen when the lid comes off. Printing it changes the whole opening moment.

A solid brand color on the insert frames each cookie like a mat around a photo. Patterns work too, as long as they do not compete with busy icing.

Keep text on the insert small and away from cavity edges, since the cutting can trim close to it. Our page on how to prepare artwork for custom packaging lists the files we need.

  • Solid insert color pulled from your logo
  • Small name or flavor printed beside each cavity
  • Kraft insert under a white printed lid for contrast
  • Inside lid message that faces the cookies when opened
  • Foil or spot UV on the lid only, keeping the insert matte

Steps From Measurement to Delivery

Inserts depend on accurate sizes, so the order process starts with your cookies rather than with artwork.

Keep a few test cookies aside when the boxes arrive. Drop them into the cavities before your first big bake so you catch any surprises early.

  1. Measure each cookie, including icing, at its widest point and thickest point.
  2. Send the measurements with your logo and any design ideas.
  3. We send a free proof of the box plus a drawing of the insert layout.
  4. Check the layout against real cookies and ask for changes as often as needed.
  5. Approve, and production runs 4 to 6 business days with 2 to 3 days in transit.

Choosing Board Weight for the Insert

A thin insert bends when a heavy cookie sits in it. A thick insert is stiffer but makes very small cavities harder to cut cleanly.

For most decorated sugar cookies, a mid weight board in the 14 to 24 pt range is plenty. Thick bakery cookies with chunks may need a stiffer sheet.

Food-contact grade materials are available on request. Say whether cookies will rest bare in the cavities or go in heat sealed film first.

If cookies are bagged, the cavity has to fit the bag as well. Allow for the seal edge, which often adds more width than people expect.

Insert Problems We Help Buyers Avoid

Measuring a cookie before decorating is the classic error. Royal icing and flood work can add width all round.

Another is making the platform too shallow. The cookie top should sit just under the lid, not pressed against it or sunk deep below it.

Ordering one layout for cookies that vary in size causes trouble too. Hand cut shapes differ, so we size cavities to your largest typical piece.

Forgetting the lid depth when stacking two layers is another. Each layer needs its own platform height, which we set on the drawing.

Our team has worked on many insert jobs and will point out risks on the proof. You can read more about how we work on our about page for The Cookie Bags.

Small Insert Boxes for Favors and Singles

One or two cookies in a small box look lost without something holding them. An insert turns a tiny box into a finished favor.

Event bakers often start from a compact square. Our 4x4 cookie boxes for single favors take a one or two cavity insert well.

For weddings, a printed insert can carry the couple's initials beside the cookie. Guests often keep the box as a small memento.

Pack favors on the morning of the event if icing is fresh. Cavities hold the cookie, but they cannot stop soft icing from marking the lid.

Mailing Cookies Packed in Inserts

Inserts protect against sideways movement in transit. Drops and crushing still need an outer carton.

Put the insert box inside a corrugated shipper and fill the space around it. Our corrugated cookie shipping boxes are made for that outer layer.

A sheet of tissue across the top of the cookies stops them lifting out of their cavities if the box is turned over.

Ship one test box to yourself or a friend before a large mail run. Open it and check whether any cookie has shifted, cracked or lost icing.

Quotes for Boxes with Inserts

Insert box prices begin at $0.30 per unit. The insert layout, box size, board, quantity and finishes shape your final figure, which the quote confirms.

Send cookie sizes and a layout idea, then ask us to quote your insert box. Email info@thecookiebags.com if you would rather attach photos.

If you have an existing box you like, mail us a sample. Matching a known size speeds up the layout drawing.

Delivery to the US, UK, Canada and Australia costs you nothing. Misprinted or damaged stock reported inside 10 days is reprinted or refunded.

Cookie Boxes with Inserts: questions

What is a cookie box insert?

It is a die-cut paperboard tray with an opening for each cookie. It sits inside the box and holds every piece in a fixed spot.

Can the cavities match my cookie cutter shapes?

Yes. Send the cutter or a photo of a cookie on a ruler and we trace the outline with room for icing.

How much space should a cavity leave?

About two millimeters around the cookie works for most designs. It holds the cookie without scraping the icing.

Can an insert hold items other than cookies?

Yes. We cut cavities for small jars, wrapped candies or folded cards alongside the cookies.

Can the insert be printed?

Yes. Solid colors, small labels beside each cavity or a light pattern all print on the insert.

What board weight should the insert be?

Most decorated cookies sit well in 14 to 24 pt board. Heavy cookies may need a stiffer sheet.

Do inserts work for heat sealed cookies?

Yes, as long as we size each cavity to the sealed pack, including the seal edge.

Can I use the same insert for different cookies?

It works if the cookies are close in size. Very different shapes are better served by separate layouts.

Are inserts safe for cookies placed directly in them?

Food-contact grade materials are available on request. Tell us how the cookies will be packed and we will advise.

Will cookies stay in place if the box is tipped?

The insert stops sliding. Add tissue on top so cookies cannot lift out if the box turns over.

Do inserts arrive already in the boxes?

No. Boxes and inserts ship flat, and the insert drops in after you fold the box.

How long does an insert box order take?

Production takes 4 to 6 business days after you approve the proof, plus 2 to 3 business days in transit.
