A paper cookie box is a folding carton. It is die-cut from one sheet of paperboard, scored along the fold lines and glued at one seam.

That is different from a rigid box, which wraps printed paper around thick chipboard. Paper boxes weigh less, cost less to ship and take far less room to store.

It is also different from a corrugated mailer. Corrugated board has a fluted middle layer built for the knocks of a parcel network.

Bakeries, farmers market sellers, cafes and online cookie shops order paper boxes most. You can compare the wider range of custom cookie box styles before settling on paperboard.

Picking the right paperboard thickness

Board thickness is quoted in points. A 20 pt sheet is twenty thousandths of an inch thick. We print paper cookie boxes on 14 to 24 pt board.

Thicker board is stiffer, but it is also harder to fold on tight corners. Match the board to the weight of the cookies and how far the box will travel.

If you are unsure, tell us the cookie weight and count. We will suggest a board and send the reasoning with your quote.

A sample of each board weight can sit beside your bake while you decide. Hold the box by one corner with the cookies inside and watch the base.

White SBS board or brown kraft board

SBS is a bleached white board with a smooth, clay-coated face. It holds bright, accurate color and suits pastel or photo-heavy designs.

Kraft board keeps its natural brown tone and slightly rough feel. It reads as handmade, and it pairs well with one or two ink colors.

Some brands order both, using white for gift lines and kraft for everyday packs. Our brown kraft cookie boxes show how far a plain brown base can go.

  • Choose SBS for full color art and soft pastels
  • Choose kraft for an earthy look with fewer colors
  • Use white ink on kraft to make logos stand out
  • Keep fine text above 6 pt on either board

Box styles you can fold from a single sheet

A tuck end box closes with a flap at the top and bottom. It folds quickly and works well for a short stack of round cookies.

A sleeve and tray slides open like a drawer. It feels more like a gift, and you can print a short message on the tray floor.

Two-piece lid boxes use a separate base and lid. They suit flat layouts where every cookie faces up, such as decorated rounds.

Window boxes swap part of the paperboard for a clear PET panel. Shoppers see the bake before they buy, which helps at a busy counter.

Each style can take paperboard dividers. These keep sandwich cookies or iced rounds from rubbing against each other on the way home.

Matching the box to where you sell

A counter box needs to look good on a shelf and open easily for a quick peek. A tuck end or window style fits that job well.

A gift box gets carried, handed over and opened slowly. A sleeve and tray or a two-piece lid makes that moment feel considered.

A box that goes into a parcel needs a snug fit and an outer carton. Paperboard alone is not built for courier sorting belts.

If you sell in more than one place, keep one artwork and change the style. Our notes on packaging cookies for retail sale cover labels and shelf life too.

Keeping butter and grease off the board

Paperboard is absorbent, so buttery cookies can leave oil spots after a few days. The fix is a barrier between the cookie and the board.

We can add a grease-resistant lined paper inside the box. Many bakers also wrap each cookie in cello or lay a glassine sheet on the base.

Lamination on the outside protects the print from fingerprints. It does not stop oil moving through from the inside, so plan the liner as well.

For direct contact, ask us about food-contact grade board and liners. Let us know if cookies go in bare or wrapped, and we will match the material.

Printing and finishes for paper boxes

We print in full color CMYK or match exact Pantone shades. Ink can cover the outside, the inside, or both, which suits a message hidden under the lid.

Matte lamination gives a soft, velvety feel, while gloss makes colors look richer. Aqueous coating is a lighter option for everyday boxes.

Spot UV, foil stamping and embossing add detail to a logo or pattern. Use them on one element so the effect stays clear.

Our designers can help you plan the artwork and finishes before the proof stage. That help is free.

Storing and folding flat-packed paper boxes

Paper boxes arrive flat in cartons, so a few hundred fit on one shelf. Keep them in a dry room away from ovens, dishwashers and steam.

Humidity softens paperboard and makes flaps curl. Store cartons off the floor and fold boxes shortly before packing day.

Folding takes a couple of seconds once staff know the flap order. Practice with a few on the first day so the sequence becomes habit.

Hold back a small stock of spare boxes. A dropped carton or a coffee spill should not leave you short on a market morning.

Count your weekly use for a month before reordering. That number tells you how many boxes to keep on hand and when to quote the next batch.

Paper box orders run through five simple stages, from measurements to delivery. You can send your box details for a quote at any point and we reply with options.

  1. Tell us the cookie size, count per box and board color.
  2. Send your logo or artwork, or ask us to lay it out.
  3. Mark up the free proof with fold, flap and color notes.
  4. Sign off and the flat sheets go to press for 4 to 6 business days.
  5. Flat-packed cartons land with you 2 to 3 business days after leaving us.

The most common mistake is measuring dough instead of a baked cookie. Bake a test batch and measure the widest and thickest pieces.

Another is picking thin board for a heavy dozen. The base can bow when lifted, and the cookies slide into one corner.

Leave a little air at the top of the stack. A box filled to the lid will crack icing and scuff the print as it closes.

Check that your label or sticker has a flat panel to sit on. Curved tuck flaps make labels peel at the edges.

Finally, check how the box travels after it leaves you. For parcels, our guide to shipping cookies without breakage covers outer cartons and padding.

Pricing, delivery and reprints

Paper cookie boxes are quote-based, with pricing from $0.30 per unit. Size, board, quantity and finish set the final figure, which we confirm in writing.

We send finished boxes free of charge to addresses in the US, UK, Canada and Australia. Transit usually takes 2 to 3 business days after printing ends.

Paper Cookie Boxes: questions

Are paper cookie boxes the same as cardboard boxes?

Paper cookie boxes use thin paperboard folded into a carton. Corrugated cardboard has a fluted middle layer and is used more for shipping.

What board thickness should I pick for a dozen cookies?

Most dozen boxes work well on 20 to 24 pt board. It keeps the base flat when the box is lifted from one end.

Can I get white paper cookie boxes?

Yes. White SBS board is the usual choice for bright color, and it prints pastels accurately.

Do paper cookie boxes come assembled?

No, they arrive flat to save room in your kitchen. Each one folds by hand in a few seconds without tape.

Will butter soak through the paperboard?

It can over a few days with rich cookies. Ask for a grease-resistant liner or wrap cookies individually to prevent spotting.

Can you print inside a paper cookie box?

Yes. We can print the inside panels with a pattern, a thank-you note or care instructions.

Is the paperboard fine for bare cookies?

Ask us for food-contact grade paperboard if cookies will sit on it unwrapped. Say whether your cookies go in bare or wrapped so we pick the right stock.

Can I add a window to a paper box?

Yes. A window can be die-cut in nearly any outline on a paper box, then sealed with clear PET film.

How long does production take?

Printing takes 4 to 6 business days once you sign off the proof. Delivery follows in about 2 to 3 business days.

How much do paper cookie boxes cost?

Paper box quotes begin at $0.30 per unit. The figure moves with size, board, quantity and finish.

Can I order kraft and white boxes in one order?

Yes. Tell us the split when you ask for a quote and we will proof each version.

How should I store flat boxes before use?

Keep them in a dry spot away from steam and ovens. Damp air can make paperboard flaps curl.
